HOW I REVIEW

A little about this shelf.

A family challenge to read 1,000 unique books before kindergarten, with short, honest reviews along the way.

1,000 books before kindergarten

We’re trying to read 1,000 unique books together before kindergarten. Each title counts once, no matter how many times we read it.

Little Reading Shelf is where I share what we thought of those books, to help other parents choose their next read.

Short reviews from reading with my child

Each review has a thumbs up, meh, or thumbs down, with a few words about why. Sometimes it’s the story or illustrations; sometimes it’s my child’s reaction.

👍 Thumbs up
We liked it. The review tells you why.

😐 Meh
Some things worked for us, but the book didn’t quite win us over.

👎 Thumbs down
This one didn’t work for us. Another family may feel differently.

The ages shown are how old my child was when we read the book. They aren’t recommended age ranges.

My notes, tidied up

The opinions and favorites are mine. I get help organizing and proofreading my notes, and I check the final wording.

Book covers are credited below the image. When a cover isn’t available, you’ll see the title and author instead.

Borrowing counts, too

Library books are part of our challenge. You don’t need to buy a book to enjoy it together.

If a shopping link earns me a commission, I say so beside the link. That doesn’t change my opinion of the book.
