FROM OUR FAMILY’S BOOKSHELF

Dinosaur books for toddlers

Our growing shelf of dinosaur stories.

Dinosaur books have been part of our challenge to read 1,000 unique books before kindergarten. We read the books on this first list when my child was between 2 and 2½. Here’s what stood out to us.

Never Show a T-Rex a Book! is one of my favorites. Tiny T. Rex and the Impossible Hug gave us our Tiny and Pointy nicknames. And with Dinosaur Dance!, my child seems keener than I am.

Opposite words, with a few tricky examples

Dinosaur Roar!

by Paul Stickland and Henrietta Stickland

My review

Thumbs up

A good book for dinosaur lovers, with cute dinosaurs to introduce opposite words. I find some words, such as “meek,” hard to understand from the illustrations. I wish the authors had chosen different words for those examples.

Different reactions from parent and child

Dinosaur Dance!

by Sandra Boynton

My review

Meh

The sound effects and exclamations aren’t really my thing, and there isn’t much of a story. There are lots of dinosaur names. My child seems to like it, though.
